Experiment 6 : Chebyshev filter design

In this experiment , we designed and implemented Chebyshev filter on Scilab software. This was similar to previous experiment on Butterworth filter design. Chebyshev filters have the property that they minimize the error between the idealized and the actual filter characteristic over the range of the filter, but with ripples in the passband.
Chebyshev filter is designed using necessary parameters and its transfer function is calculated. Magnitude spectrum  is  plotted to observe passband and stopband . we observed that no of ripples were present in pass band.

  1. Chebyshev filters are used where the frequency content of the signal is more important then having a constant amplitude

  2. Chebyshev 1 and Chebyshev 2 have ripple in pass band and ripple in stop band respectively.

  3. The transition time for Chebyshev filter is less than that of Butterworth filter. So Chebyshev filter is better than Butterworth.

    1. Still for a constant amplitude response we'll have to use Butterworth

  4. The ripples in passband of Chebyshev-1 filters can prove as a disadvantage as it introduces differences in gain for the passband signal.

  5. Chebyshev 2 can be used for practical applications as there are ripples in stop band .
